TOP 5 – PLACES TO EAT SRI LANKA – COLOMBO

TOP 5 – Places to eat in Colombo Sri Lanka

Colombo has so much to discover. We recommend staying in Colombo at the end of one’s Sri Lankan adventure. It was definitely a challenge for us to list our top 5. Ministry of Crab (MOC) is one of Colombo’s most trendiest places to dine. They are now in 6 other Asian countries serving the very best Sri Lankan crabs, probably the best in the world. So here are our five which can make your farewell lunch and dinner truly feasts ! To make the day even more exciting don’t forget to enjoy sunset drinks on the rooftop at Botanik.

1- Nana’s at Galle Face Green

This is the place to get a fix of Sri Lankan street food classics, such as “isso wade”, “koththu rotti” and barbequed seafood.  Grab a plastic chair and we can fix a local beer or two (generally no alcoholic beverages are served) and enjoy watching the people wandering the waterfront.  Definitely an evening venue.

Most of the stalls down here are good, though watch out for Nana’s.  The original is no-longer and there are now three (yes, there’s a story in that,  which I’m sure your tuk tuk driver will be happy to tell you!) and we’d go for the one named Nana’s King.

2- Paradise Road The Gallery Café

The Gallery Café is housed in the former offices of world-renowned Sri Lankan architect, the late Geoffrey Bawa, who personally approved the take-over of his beloved property and it’s conversion into a gallery and café . It’s a very pleasing and calm atmosphere (non AC) where one can choose from a variety of local & international cuisine (and a major dessert menu with a lot of chocolate).  The Gallery itself features established and emerging local artists and the shop has some of the best quality souvenirs in the country.  The venue can be better enjoyed during evenings!

3- Nuga Gama

Set around a 200 year-old banyan tree at Cinnamon Grand, this is like being immersed back in a rustic village (complete with ‘Nuga’, their pet cow who was rescued from the butcher and moos in the background),  right in the heart of the city and always proves to be a heart-warming experience with a splendid traditional Sri Lankan buffet, with plenty for all palates.  The friendly staff will only be too happy to talk about dishes and explain the ingredients and how they have been prepared.  Besides offering delicious and hearty meals, Nuga Gama claims to be Asia’s first carbon neutral venue.  This is wholesome Sri Lankan hospitality at its best. Open only for dinner.

4- Kaema Sutra

Kaema Sutra at the Shangri-La is a joint venture with celebrity chef, Darshan Munidara and internationally acclaimed Bollywood actress Jacqueline Fernandez and offers contemporary Sri Lankan cuisine in a luxury hotel environment.  It’s certainly got the big city vibe, along the lines of a Neil Perry establishment.  This is very much about being here and enjoying the ambiance, cocktails & of course fusion Sri Lankan dishes.

5- Rare Bar & Kitchen @ Residence by Uga Escapes

We really do leave the best to last!  This is the ultimate experience we recommend to guests as their finale dinner in Sri Lanka.

Inspired by the flavours of Sri Lanka, Rare Bar + Kitchen is contemporary cuisine with an emphasis on fresh local ingredients.  Many of these come directly from their own organic farms on the East Coast and in the Cultural Triangle.  All dishes have a refreshing gastronomic flair which Blumenthal fans would appreciate and each dish is a conversation piece.  In an intimate environment, this is definitely a foodie’s heaven where you know the team passionately work with precision, gusto & creativity.  Don’t leave the country until you have had the Cinnamon Smoked Lobster.
