Meet Merl, one of The Travel Concierge’s Chauffeur-Guides
Merl is considered one of our best Chauffeur-Guides and we are very proud to have him working with TTC Sri Lanka. Prior to getting in to the tourism field six years ago, Merl was a banker. He had a burning desire to leave the suit and office job to be able to show foreigners what Sri Lanka has to offer and to be continually travelling across his homeland. With his friendly and humble attitude, Merl always does his best to make his guests smile and enjoy Sri Lanka to the fullest; taking care of his passengers while also looking after the surroundings.
While on tour he collects abandoned plastics from tourist sites whenever he can and disposes of them at TTC approved recycling centres.
Like every member of the team, he loves traditional food and enjoys teaching guests how to eat curry & rice the Sri Lankan way – by using the hands! He also won’t forget to extend the offer of local brews of toddy and arrack and he believes that no trip to Sri Lanka is complete without enjoying these!
The famous Sigiriya Rock fortress is one of Merl’s most favourite places to show guests and he had climbed to the summit at least 237 times! (that over half a million steps!)
Just when you thought that he is fit, “footloose and fancy free”, we can tell you that when he’s not caring for TTC’s guests, Merl loves to travel to lesser known parts of Sri Lanka with his wife and two children…
Where is your favourite place in Sri Lanka?
Other than Sigiriya Rock, Kandy for the cooler climate in the evening
What is your favourite Sri Lankan food?
Would be the local classic of string hopper with coconut sambal & lake fish curry
Which place do you like to stay the most in the country?
Anywhere in the country is good for me. My home town is Kandana, a suburb in northern Colombo
Where’s the best location for hopeless romantics & honeymooners?
Many! Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ella and Thangalla
What do you love doing most when you’re not at TTC?
Like most Sri Lankans, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends
Where’s the best nightlife in Colombo?
Mount Lavinia Beach and Barracuda Seafood & Grill restaurant (now in three locations) for drinking and party.
If you could have any five people join you for a picnic on the top of Pidurangala, who would they be?
